Compatibility issue - Skype Mastermind and IE 8

After a long wait and producing one of the worst OS (if I may say so) i.e. Windows Vista, Microsoft has come up with this amazing Operating system - Windows 7. If it is not one of the best OS around, it is way better and faster than Windows Vista and I am sure we all agree on that (well almost everyone except MAC followers).

Microsoft offers free download of the Release Candidate of Windows 7 OS. It’s been a long time since the public release of Windows 7 Beta and RC versions and I am sure most of us have already tried Windows 7 OS personally. If you haven't installed Windows 7 yet and if you may wish to try Windows 7 then click here to download Windows 7 RC. I will not talk in detail about Windows 7 download, however, I would like to add that Microsoft will offer free download of Windows 7 RC version till August 20th, 2009. Click here to learn about Windows 7 OS.

PS: Expected date of arrival for RTM version of Windows 7 is October 22.

I have been using Microsoft Windows 7 x64 bit RC for so many months now; I have tried most of the software on my Windows 7 installation. Though most of the software did work flawlessly on Windows 7, however, a few failed to install. I will keep updating my post to add about the software incompatibilities and articles about latest updates for Windows 7.

Well, in this post we will discuss about issue with the incompatibility between Skype add-on and IE 8. Most of us may thought Windows Vista was to be blamed. However, that was not the case; Skype has taken full responsibility for the issue and has discussed about it in detail.

PS: Skype 4.1 version have been released.

I have tried Skype 4.0 version on my Windows 7 (64-bit) OS, and the issue still exists. For the users who haven’t experienced the issue, this is how the error message may appear after installing Skype:

Fig: Skype mastermind add-on does not work with IE 8 on Windows 7/Windows Vista
Solution:
1. Launch IE 8 >> When you see the error message, Click on ‘Always open Internet Explorer without this add-on’ option.

2. Or, Open IE 8, click Tools >> Manage Add-ons >> Select Skype mastermind add-on >> Click Disable and close Internet Explorer >> Restart Internet Explorer to check results.
3. You can install Skype without having to install Internet Explorer add-in. Here’s how:
a. Download latest Skype version from here
b. Click Save to save Skype for later install.
c. Double Click the downloaded application file for Skype
d. Click Run, when you click Run you will see installation screen as below:

e. Do not click Install instead click on 'Options'
f. Uncheck ‘Install Skype Plug-in for Internet Explorer’ option and then click ‘I agree-Install’

g. After installation, launch Internet Explorer to check for results.

You can install the Skype add-in at any point of time. Follow the below instructions to do so:
1. Double click the downloaded Skype installer file
2. When you see installation screen, click on ‘Options’
3. Uncheck all other options except ‘Install Skype Plugin for Internet Explorer’ option and click Install.

I suggest, do not install Skype add-in until Skype fix this issue in their future release. Check for the latest updates from Skype.
